So now to my experience in engineering: it does not always depend on how glossy or matte something is, but also on the matter of chemistry and heat.
Inkjet Printing: The Battle of Dye vs. Pigment
When you have an inkjet printer, e.g. Canon PIXMA or Epson SureColor the printer sprays tiny droplets of liquid ink onto the paper.
- Glossy Media: Smooth media require a special swellable or microporous coating. This coating immediately surrounds the droplet to prevent blooming. When you wrongly set the inputs, the ink will be on the surface and will be smeared. Tip: activate the driver to Photo Paper to decrease the ink.

Adhesive Chemistry: It’s Not Just About the Face Stock
No matter about glossy or matte, it is the layer underneath that makes the adhesion. There are two types of adhesives that are usually used by our formulation lab:
- Acrylic Adhesives (Water-based): These are water-based adhesives; they have a better UV-resistant feature and sustainability in clarity. In the case of window decals, particularly glossy ones, acrylic is the norm since it does not turn yellow with time.
- Rubber-based (Hot-melt): They have excellent initial tack and are suitable on textured surfaces such as cardboard boxes. They can however bleed on the margins in case of exposure to high temperatures and leave behind a sticky residue.
Our ASTM D3330 peel adhesion tests are done on a daily basis. Interestingly the matte paper labels tend to be a little lower in shear strength in comparison to glossy vinyls. The face stock of the paper is not very strong and may tear away before the adhesive disintegrates.
