When you are engaged in manufacturing or creating stickers, you must have thought of whether various release liners are compatible. The adhesives have taken me years of researching the molecular bonding of these products and the resin employed in these is highly dissimilar to the normal glues. Parchment paper does not provide a strong mechanical or chemical bond with epoxy resin since the fibers are covered with silicone. The silicone has a very low surface energy and hence the liquid resin does not soak in, but rather flows into beads. I tend to be uncomfortable using the resin, which is costly and pour it on porous paper, yet parchment does not do so.
Does resin peel off parchment paper?
Most of the time my colleagues pose the question during high stakes adhesive research; whether epoxy resin will come off parchment paper. The answer is yes. After being dipped in sulphuric acid, parchment paper is covered with a coating of thin layer of silicone. It may appear fragile, but its non-stick properties even remain intact in the presence of severe chemical conditions. I consider it much better than improvised plastic wraps which may melt and stick to what you are doing. Parchment does not last long in the way of making moulds, but it is most excellent in quick releases.
What material will resin not stick to?
When examining the molecular architecture of adhesive carriers, I was able to name a number of materials that do not co-operate with aggressive polymers. Silicone is the unquestionable leader. True vegetable parchment buffered with a coating of silicone is also an option, although amateurish users tend to use wax paper, which melts to become part of the resin and destroys clarity and strength. Tapes made of even some high-density polyethylene (HDPE) such as those tapes utilized in tucking in the sticker industry are also a fantastic barrier. It is equally important to cope with intermolecular forces that regulate non-adhesion as it is to control adhesion. It is a matter of making sure that your project does not get stuck to your working table.
What adhesive sticks to parchment paper?
It is difficult to find an adhesive that would stick well to parchment. The vast majority of glues slide off due to the presence of silicone coating which forms an oily coating between wet bonders. To ensure stability, special pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) that are high in rubber or vicious acrylics should be used. These are high-tack adhesives which are applicable to low-surface energy substrates. Common school glue or water-based craft paste fall off like a scab after they dry. Hot melt glues may be used, though their durability is doubtful, since the combination will be based on a mechanical squeeze and not on a chemical fusion. The material is capricious as far as sticker-manufacturing is concerned.
Silicone is bitten by chemistry used in specialized splicing tapes. Even then, you are struggling against nature of the natural release of the paper. You are gambling on luck, otherwise, without a high-performance adhesive that is a silicone. That feeling of a broken relationship is not imaginary, and being aware of the wetting chemistry would help relieve some of the tension.
What paper doesn’t stick to epoxy resin?
When conducting polymer research, it is like needle-in-haystack to find a paper that will not bond when treated with curing epoxy, unless you are aware of the chemistry of release coatings. The worst thing is that standard office bond or construction paper absorbs the resin making an irreversible mess due to its cellulose fibers. Such liners consist of an interlaced silicone surface that forms a barrier such that the resin cannot enter or take root. The synthetic papers that are polypropylene can also be used; they are extruded plastics that have a non-polar surface that is resistant to epoxy. There is nothing like a delightful feeling that I experience when I peel a cured slab of high quality glassine or parchment, and I see a mirror-like finish.
Greaseproofs have a chance to be useful, but they cannot be as dependable as silicone liners. It is advisable to avoid matte photo papers or other porous ones because the resin will cling to them and will not release. Adherence to non-reactive and low-energy surfaces is a guaranty of the uninterrupted working process and high-quality professional outcomes.
What is the best paper to use with resin?
Going after the gold standard paper to match with epoxy pours, consider the high-end release liners with which stickers are created. My favorite one is a clay coated kraft paper with heavy silicone layer since it is a dimensionally stable type of paper. It maintains the resin in a curbless manner. Another most ideal solution is bleached glassine; its air-tight fibrous structure ensures the resin does not seep, leaving a clear and transparent finish. Ordinary printer paper is a catastrophe, it is too porous. Rather, find papers that have been supercalendered, which is to put heavy rollers on it, to make the surface so smooth that the resin beads like water on a freshly-waxed car.
When you need a sharp, business-like finish, then use a substrate with low buckling on the curing heat. I have tried numerous materials, but a silicone-treated, thick liner always wins over the others, and it gives every release. Never use subpar kitchen equipment where you can get the effect of industrial quality with the proper release paper.
