The glitter wrapping paper is so audacious that it can overwhelm any adhesive expert. It is, by all means, the final killer of the conventional pressure-sensitive tapes since you are not gluing to a two-dimensional surface. Rather, you are expected to glue a layer of film to the thousands of minute raggedy three dimensional pieces of plastic or metal. These particles provide the glue with virtually no surface to stick to. It is as impossible as attempting to tape two handfuls of sand together. I find myself frequently frustrated by my present-giving wrappings that do not unravel as the tape never snaps out of the glitter huffs and starts to get stuck on the paper, where it remains permanently. The result of this topographical nightmare is gigantic mechanical failure- in the lab we refer to it as interfacial delamination.
How to get something to stick to glitter paper?
It is monumental to attain a lasting bond on glittered materials since the substrate is broken. In my lab view, the issue with this is that conventional tape adhesive is so thin that it cannot bridge the gaps between glitter particles. In order to succeed, an adhesive that is of high conformability and a thick coat, which will basically be a glue that acts as a liquid and not a solid film is required. The only available options that flow into the craggy topography of the paper are heavy-duty two sides foam tape or a special high-tack acrylic adhesive. It is as filling in a pothole with asphalt; you have to have sufficient mass to smooth the surface. The other trick is to add surface energy on the landing zone but this has to be delicate. Does hot glue work on glitter wrapping paper?
I believe hot glue is the holy grail in terms of overpowering glittered surfaces in my working opinion. In pressure sensitive tape, you just feel the tips of the pieces of glitter. However, molten ethylene-vinyl acetate does not behave. It is massive and warm and can move–with pressure–around single gritters, practically coating it and creating a profound mechanical hook that can never be given by a film based adhesive. I have a scientific pleasure in watching the liquid polymer oozing into those minute crevices. The heat is able to soften the plastic glitter, in certain cases combining at the molecular scale. When it gets to thermal equilibrium it is a strong, nearly indestructible bond.
You have to be careful, however, since the heat can bend thin paper backing that is cheap. It is a fine body of thermostat and time. Glue guns with high temperature are superior in wet-out, although they also have the potential to melt the decorative coating. Low-temperature guns could be frozen too much on dry glitter resulting in a weak bond that cracks like a scab. This is a trade‑off. The difference between the typical office supplies is shown by the years of testing of my peel strength of melt-resin: the glitter is giving me the quality of night and day. It is the distinction between a weak handshake and one that is vice-like. Be careful of your fingers, molten polymers are hot and dangerous.
How to seal glitter on paper without glue?

I weep at seeing a sheet of paper that is laminated in a perfect way; the clarity is flawless. The second option is using the transparent gesso or heavy acrylic with a sponge, which is on the verge of glue. When you never touch liquids, a bond on dry-mounting tissue a.k.a. heat-activated film is formed with such tightness that it forms a bond almost the molecular level. It is a victory of material engineering against disorderly texture.
What kind of tape will stick to glitter wrapping paper?
The clear kind of cellulose tape, which you find in kitchens, is useless in the defences of glitter. The majority of office tapes were low coated weight tapes, i.e. the layer of glue is so thin that it does not contact the paper fibers underneath the sparkles. In order to prevent failure, you should search to find tapes using high-tack, rubber-based adhesives or extreme mounting tapes. I tend to use violent tack on specialized washi tapes, or red-line polyester tape, two-sided. This tape applies a viscous adhesive of acrylic that is given the space between minute fragments of plastic. It is a wonderful chemical handiwork.
My other heavy-hitter is duct tape, but the transparent and tough versions of the duct tapes, used to fix outdoor damages. These possess a pliable, sticky material that adhesively sticks on permanently and not just touching the surface. It is gratifying when a good bond snaps. Search on tapes selling as difficult surface or low surface energy plastics. They are designed to be highly grab to conquer the topographical nightmare that glitter is. I have weighed peel force in grams per inch; the average tape will give scarcely any figure–slips off like water on the back of a duck. The absence of a high-build adhesive is sending you on a goose chase and tearing your wrapping paper. It is a waste and I would not want it to happen to my worst opponent.
Can I use hairspray to seal glitter?
Applying a personal grooming product as an industrial fixative can certainly appear a desperate hack but the chemistry tells otherwise. Hairspray is not high-energy glitter particles, but a dilute polymer solution (polyvinylpyrrolidone) to be used on hair fibers. It’s not a permanent solution. It can form an ad hoc sticky layer, preventing certain shedding, but hard when the solvent is evaporated. Hairspray is a moisture-attracting compound; the glitter paper gets sticky or forms a hazy film that destroys the glitter with time. It is also missing UV stabilizers hence the paper will turn yellow when it is under display lights- a time bomb. The strength of the bond is comically low with regard to clear-coat resin. Playing with the paper frequently breaks the seal, and you are left with dried aerosol and glitter on your hands. It is much safer and more resistant to using a special fixative or acrylic spray. Depending on hairspray brings one to a quality dead end.
