1. The Face Stock (The Substrate)
This is where the print is done. I have observed customers that print on everything, however, three polymers are primarily used to create clear labels:
- Polyester (PET): It is the best when it comes to durability, heat resistant (which is a factor in laser printers that get to 400F/200C) and robust.
- Polypropylene (BOPP): Polypropylene BOP is transparent just like the standard vinyl and repels oil and water. It goes well on shampoo bottles since it fits well in semi-squeezy containers.
- Vinyl (PVC): It is pliable, soft and can be used outdoors, however, there is diminished heat resistance and it is not eco-friendly.
2. The Adhesive Layer (The Chemistry)
This is where magic and the headache takes place. You cannot simply put rubber glue on a clear plastic since rubber turns yellow with time.
In case of transparent stickers we almost always use the Acrylic Emulsion Adhesives. Acrylics are clear and UV resistant and dry. Initial Tack (speed of sticking) and Ultimate Adhesion (speed of holding after 24 hours) are measured within our lab.
Warning: When using water based acrylic adhesive sticker with the wet method (spraying water to fix it in place) the adhesive may momentarily turn milky white- known as blushing. This is not the case with high-quality solvent-based acrylics.

Printing Technology: Inkjet vs. Laser
Being an engineer I have ruined my share of printers that were tested on compatibility. It is here where we are going to see the truth behind printing clear stickers at home or in your little office.
Inkjet Printing (The Absorption Problem)
Plastic is non‑porous. When you spray liquid dye or pigment ink onto raw plastic it will fill up and bloat. It never dries.
This is solved by having manufacturers apply a microscopic coating (called top coat or receptive coating) to the face stock. The coating is spongy and the ink is absorbed and thus it dries immediately.
- The Trap:When purchasing low cost sticker paper, the layer may not be smooth and the results may be mottled where the print appears blotchy.
- The Fix: It is important to always ensure that your printer has either dye or pigment ink. There is only one technique that some type of coating will work with. As a case in point, pigment inks are placed on top and require a more porous coating, which prevents smearing.
Laser Printing (The Heat Problem)
Laser printers do not utilise wet ink but toner. The fuser unit melts the plastic powder on to the page.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to run the regular vinyl through a laser printer. PVC is vinyl and once it gets hot, it gives off chlorine gas, which corrosively affects your printer and it fuses onto fuser rollers and kills a 500 dollar maintenance kit in seconds. Use laser transparency labels based on PET.
Application Science: Avoiding the Dreaded Bubbles
You print your sticker and then go to stick it on a window and it gives you bubbles, fingerprints and a horrible appearance.

The “Wet Method” Technique
Secret of industry to apply clear vinyls in perfect ways:
- Clean the Surface:Wipe the surface using isopropyl alcohol. Windex has ammonia which is capable of assaulting certain acrylic adhesives.
- Create a Slip Solution:Prepare a slip solution: add one drop of dish soap to a spray bottle of water.
- Spray Everything:Spray all: the glass and the sticker adhesive side. The glue gets wet.
- Float and squeegee: Sticker will be attached, and it will sail on the layer of water. Slide it into position. With a squeegee or credit card move water outward at the center towards the edges.
- Dry: when the water is evaporated, the adhesive is regained in tack.
Note:This technique is not to be used with paper labels or water sensitive inkjet finishes unless they are laminated.
Environmental Standards and Safety
In the business-to-business environment, compliance is an issue. In case you produce retail-based products, there are some requirements that your stickers need to satisfy.
We use ISO 216 to list the paper sizes but sustainability is becoming an increasing concern. FSC certification is becoming a target of many of the face stocks so that liner paper is sourced in the responsibly controlled forests.
To be safe with adhesives, particularly in food packaging, seek the requirement of 175.105 of FDA. The sticking compound should not leech into the food.
